Superb album by East Los Angeles band The Village Callers, recorded live in 1968 and released on Eddie Davis’s Rampart Records.
.
Seasoned and popular band at all the top venues, The Village Callers brought many different sounds into the mix: jazz, soul, R&B and lots of Latin percussion.
Their only LP consisted mainly of groove-filled covers such as ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’, ‘I Don’t Need No Doctor’, João Donato’s ‘The Frog’ and a medley of Aretha Franklin hits.
‘Hector’, one of the standout cuts on the LP and its only original song, has been sampled by Beastie Boys, Cypress Hill or De La Soul among other hip-hop artists.
