The four diverse instrumental tracks on The Genius EP demonstrate a mastery of different styles and lend a ring of truth to its audacious title.
The first track and first single from the EP, “Untitled Beans,” embodies this range of expression, combining a midtempo indie-dance groove in a Daft Punk-type mode with melancholy jazz keys and spacey electro synths. It’s a track that’s hard to categorize and harder to resist. The second track, “FP-1,” flips the script completely. It’s a downtempo experimental jazz number with a complex time signature threading its way through some beautiful piano work and atmospheric pads. Fans of Carl Craig’s and Theo Parrish’s more abstract work will savor this composition.
Next, “122AM” takes us back to house territory, with a deep 4/4 groove clearly influenced by pops, augmented by a big helping of trippy techno to keep dancers in a trance whether it’s 1:22am or hours later. Last but by no means least, the EP ends on a funky and superfun note with “Positron,” a booty-shaking, melody-saturated update on the early-’80s electro-disco and boogie sound. This smokin’ cut should be a go-to for nu-disco and funky-house DJs soundtracking summery good times this year.
With this all-killer-no-filler EP, the young Nicholson steps out from the shadow of his famous father and shows the music world that this genius has a long and fruitful career ahead of him.
