Private Function is a Modern Funk compilation presented by Voltaire Records, featuring artists from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland and Miami. 300 copies ltd - check!

Weaving through elements of Boogie, Funk, Modern Soul, and G-Funk, Private Function heralds a new breed of talented producers re-inventing and amplifying this relished sound.

“Night Time Is Coming,” a collaboration between Los Angeles based funk/g-funk producer XL Middleton and Funkmosphere resident DJ Eddy Funkster, is a track that embodies the classic bounce of 80’s boogie and the darker, futuristic feel of modern funk. Uptempo enough to dance to, yet moody enough to cruise to on the late night, this song features the iconic sounds of 808 drums, sizzling synth chords and sweeps, and is topped off with a lengthy lead synth solo from XL.

“Da Blast” is a deep injection of anterior funk by San Francisco Native and Oakland resident, K-Maxx. An upfront slapper that’s peppered with hard choppy drums, a deep bouncing bassline, and an underlying Sci-Fi feel. It’s the perfect track to blast out of a Lowrider coasting through outer-space.

“Speak Softly” is a chilling lo-fi boogie-funk tune from Cuban-American Miami native Mickey de Grand IV, using the guise of Night School. Here, the Juno 60 and Prophet 5 are utilized to create an eerie, wet, instrumental groove that rolls fluidly while introducing subtle head-nodding lead lines. De Grand IV is well-known for his work as label head of Cosmic Chronic, and as band leader of Psychic Mirrors, Dreamboat, etc.

“Loose Coupling” by Loose Shus of San Francisco, is a premier drifting jam. The beat mysteriously seems to reside at a “loose” tempo, which is either slow or fast depending on the mood of the listener. Synth leads, sonic funk textures and sub-bass dominate the landscape in this heavy closer.
