Fueled by the American dream and the laundering of millions of dollars, the city of Las Vegas has turned into a metropolitan oasis in the desert. In the 1960s and ’70s, this bastion of hedonism billed itself as “the entertainment capital of the world,” giving astute musicians the opportunity to cut their chops daily at the neon-infested hotels and casinos that dotted the strip. Under these conditions, a group of local musicians grew fed up with the menial sheet music dross that dominated their day jobs. Spirit Free strived to push the envelope and play jazz that was a bit more modern and experimental than anything being played in the city at the time. In 1971, the group committed their vision to wax with Spirit Free Plays Starship, mixing jazz with the exotic sounds of distorted sax, electric keyboards, and wah-wah pedals. The group’s lone long-player was a prelude to the fusion style that would dominate the popular jazz scene in the later half of the ‘70s.
