Oneohtrix Point Never is the project of Brooklyn-based vintage synthesizer/electronics whiz Daniel Lopatin. He's released most of his albums on No Fun and there's a certain subtle noisiness folded into the approach.
The fourth collection Returnal, which arrives via Mego, brushes through the collapsing feedback and distended howling of opener 'Nil Admirari', though, to that more patiently open, spacious realm. If you're already familiar with Lopatin's approach, you know he manages to create three-dimensions in places you'd normally expect two These new pieces continue that feel, but are his most alive/living. As far as the instrumentation, he used an Akai AX-60, Roland June-60, Roland MSQ-700, Korg Electribe ES-1, and voice to get there. It was recorded using a computer, but it sounds like he put it to tape on top of a mountain in Austria (just as all the wind stopped). Take a listen to 'Ouroboros' (think of the snake eating its tail) and 'Pelham Island Road'(think of Massachusetts Pelham Island Rd) to see what I mean. Don't worry about finding a beat!
