Low Limit & Lando Kal, otherwise known as Lazer Sword, have long been mixing, remixing, noodling, tweaking and sneaking through noise structures, but have never before released a full-fledged effort. Until now! - A 15 track album that includes vocal performances from Turf Talk, Zackey Force Funk, Myka Nyne and M. Sayyid. Tip!
Anteus Roy and Bryant Rutledge might have originally bonded over a shared love of hip hop, but when they don their alter egos of Low Limit and Lando Kal and join forces as Lazer Sword, their music sounds like the future … or maybe future blap, electro crunk, or any one of the of the other awkward tags invented over the years to describe the duo’s particular sonic brew. Marrying thick basslines, clattering beats, and ultra-heavy super-low end with synths as equally informed by vintage electro as from countless childhood hours parked in front of the TV playing Nintendo and Sega Genesis, their sound is certainly unique, the product of years spent honing their special craft.
Now, after dropping a slew of (official and not-so-official) remixes, mixtapes, and two fast-moving 12”s for Inno-vative Leisure and Glasgow’s hype Numbers label, Lazer Sword are ready to reveal their self-titled debut album. Primarily written and recorded in their former San Francisco stomping ground (they’ve recently relocated to LA and Berlin), ‘Lazer Sword’ sounds bigger, bolder, and more fully realised than any of their previous output, and finds the duo enlisting a few friends for guest appearances by M. Sayyid (Anti-Pop Consortium), MC Myka 9 (Freestyle Fellowship), Bay area hyphy don Turf Talk, and bizarro funk crooner Zackey Force Funk. But it’s Lazer Sword them-selves who wield the flashing blades here, as demonstrated by the ghostly vocal samples, skittering percussion and thundering vocoder funk of ‘Batman’, or the hip hop stomp and swirling synths of album opener ‘Tar’.
In all its intricate detail, ‘Lazer Sword’ is certainly suitable for headphones, but with beats that slap this hard, these tunes are fully customised for rigorous car-testing, and destined to rumble dancefloors everywhere.
This special European edition CD also contains four remixes from the ultra-limited ‘Batman’ 12”, courtesy of Rustie, LA’s world-beat and big-bass-toting duo Nguzunguzu, and the two LS masterminds themselves both doing a separate Low Limit and Lando Kal refix production.
