25 year old Jazz multi-instrumentalist and composer, Nick Rosen, on his debut magnum opus, Into The Sky, enlists producer, writer, and arranger of 2009’s critically acclaimed J Dilla tribute EP entitled, Suite For Ma Duke; none other than the extremely talented Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Ferguson takes the role of producer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist performer for a number of tracks on Nick Rosen’s first full-length offering. The album’s overall sound is influenced by a broad range of genres from Rock’s Beatles to Soul’s Sam Cooke to even the aughts’ late great jazz hip-hop producer J Dilla. This broad range of influences is apparent in the album’s overall eclectic modern jazz sound.
The synergistic chemistry of Rosen and Atwood-Ferguson is one of the underlying selling points for the album. The duo’s synergy provides a refreshing take on on the genre, allowing for easy accessibility for non-jazz enthusiasts. Despite the album’s two minor blemishes its finer moments successfully buff out any imperfections the two outliers left and create an overall solid release for Nick Rosen’s debut opus Into The Sky.
