Nora Guthrie's ultra-rare "Emily's Illness", a lost gem of songcraft originally released in 1967, reissued now in 2009 in the same seven-inch vinyl format (b/w "Home Before Dark") as the original.
Featuring the pure vocals the then seventeen-year-old daughter of Woodie Guthrie, "Emily's Illness" was written by Eric Eisner, a romantic collaboration which birthed these two songs, beautiful examples of youthful lyrical innocence tempered by world-weary wisdom, pop music with sophisticated "adult" arrangements and instrumentation, a kind of acid-folk, but informed by the harmonic and rhythmic developments of Joao Gilberto and jazz.
The two songs are a perfect combination of Eisner's lyrical skills and wistful melodicism, Guthrie's unaffected vocals, and rich yet elegantly restrained arrangements from Artie Schroeck.
Arranged and conducted by Artie Schroeck
