Anthony Joseph is one of the most exciting and innovative voices, poet, musician, performer, and leading writers of his generation. Born in Trinidad and based in London since 1989, Joseph creates what he calls liquid textology together with The Spasm Band who provide the musical component of Joseph's novel The African Origins of UFOs as heard on Leggo de Lion.
The Spasm Band play a kind of 'wild island Jazz' with direct lineage to Caribbean ancestry, a sound infused with Trinidadian spiritual baptist rhythms, deep, hypnotic basslines, jagged sax and hard hand percussion - Its a music made to cause possession spasms - Go be hot! Drum skin bust! Leggo de lion on dem!
Besides the imminent release of his latest fiery musical adventure, Joseph is the author of two poetry collections, a spoken word CD and his most recent novel The African Origins of UFOs which has been described as an "afro-psychedelic-noir", a mind-trip, a work of metafiction, mythology, Afro-futurism, and a future fiction classic.
Excerpt - That naked island funk was steady lickin' hips with polyrhythmic thunderclaps! Does the Berta butt boogie? do bump hips? Flip an spin & bopn finger pop'n-subaquantum bass lines pumping pure people-riddim funk like snake rubber twisting in aluminium bucket, Reverberating round the frolic house with a heavy heartbeat, causing black to buck and shiver
WOOEEE! WOOEEEE!!
