DJ Andy Smith (known as DJ for Portishead) is back with his latest musical offering. Unlike other albums in the Document series, which showcases classic grooves and beats from across the genres, taking in funk, hip hop, rock and reggae, Trojan Document focuses in on Andys love of Reggae, featuring selections from Derrick Morgan, Desmond Dekker, The Upsetters. King Tubby, Johnny Osbourne, Gregory Isaac and U-Roy (to name a few) mixed up sound system style! What I have attempted to do on this CD is give a rough impression of how Reggae evolved and present it in the way I remember hearing it! In fact this is this the way it is still played by sound systems like Gladdy Wax (the way I believe Reggae should be heard). From the Ska selections I take you through the periods of Rocksteady, Roots, DJ tracks (DJ meaning MC in 60s and 70s Jamaica), Dub and then into 80s Dancehall. To me these are the golden eras of Reggae (not that I dismiss anything I might hear today, but there are too many old records that arent heard enough today). I hope you enjoy the selections I enjoyed doing the mix 31 tracks total. Tip!
