A unique 'soundbox' from China which has caused huge fuss everywhere - Kind of like a lo-fi i-pod. A miniature sound installation, that you can put on in rooms or spaces instead of the usual CD. The Buddha Machine comes with an integrated speaker, a volume control, mini jack-out and a switch to choose between nine different loops which are stored on a small chip and can be directly played by this mini soundsystem. The brainchild of Christian Virant and Zhang Jian of FM3, Christian is possibly already known to you for his work compiling several volumes of the excellent Sublime Frequencies series. They were inspired by the chanting devices often sold at Chinese temples, a digital equivalent of the more traditional prayer wheels and wind chimes. Despite mass production efforts, or perhaps because of them, each machine plays at a slightly different pitch and slightly different tempo.
