Liscenced from Mochilla, now out on Ninja Tune (Not as a longbox though). This project was set up by LA based photographer B+. He has directed various music videos and did numerous shoots and designs for album covers for people like Freestyle Fellowship, Q-Tip, Mos Def, Company Flow, DJ Shadow, YNQ and many others, as well as articles for the Rappages magazine.
It started out as a photoshoot of four LA based session drummers: Roy Porter ( who passed away during the making of this movie; this DVD is dedicated to him), Earl Palmer ( recorded for the likes of Bo Diddley, David Axelrod and Little Richard etc and apparantly the most recorded drummer of times..), Paul Humphrey ( played with artists as diverse as Zappa, Coltrane and Steely Dan; drums on Marvin Gayes Lets get it on) and James Gadson ( played drums for Dyke & the Blazers, Bill Withers and Charles Wright ao) and have them talk about the recordings that they featured on. DJs Babu and J Rocc joined the get-together and started playing them the beats that the drummers once played themselves leading to a live drums-turntable jam between them. This was al recorded and made into a 13 minute film that is featured on this DVD. This musical dialogue was then performed as a live concert in LA featuring extra muscicians / turntablists like Derf Reklaw ( known for his work with The Pharoahs, and Built An Ark ao), Madlib, Numark and Shortkut of which an amazing 53 minutes is put on this DVD. For the rest the DVD has 38 minutes of audio commentary with the drummers with lots of interesting and funny anekdotes of the bands they played in, tales about lost recordings and so on. Other features are: DJ Shadow's 'Midnight in a Perfect World' video, directed by B+, 'Keepintime Abstract' (an abstract remix by Steve McIntyre), 'Keepintime' (Media Composer Remix by Paul da Man), Essays by Dave Tompkins and B+, a selected visual discography, a stills gallery, subtitles are in Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish.
In this pack theres also a remix CD where basically everyone involved got a different 10 minutes from the live show to rework. Remixers like Charly Dark ( former Attica Blues, Blacktronica ), Ammoncontact ( from LA, featuring Dwight trible), Dj Shadow, Nobody (Ubiquity Records), Cut Chemist, King Britt, Daedalus and more are on that CD.
