The broadcast version of Style Wars, aired on PBS in 1983 presented to Americans an exact situation of this new form of urban art and its social, visual, political consequences on art itself and on New York City's landscape. Strongly opposed by Mayors Ed Koch first and Rudy Giuliani later, graffiti artists became a sort of street warriors who battled for freedom of expression and tied themselves inexorably to the breakdance scene and later to hip hop culture.
