Derek Carr was born and grew up in Westmeath, Ireland. Managing to avoid heavy metal as a teenager, he becameinterested in electronic music through bands such as Depeche Mode, OMD, The Human League and Kraftwerk. As an avid reader of the NME, he started to notice pieces on Detroit techno around 1988/89, but it was a couple more years before he was exposed to electronic dance music for the first time. For his debut release, Copperbeech, Derek pressed 500 copies under his own Trident imprint and, with no distribution, proceeded to sell them by hand around Dublin'srecord stores. The record caught the attention of people like Muzik's Dave Mothersole, Dave Angel, Dan Curtin and Colin Dale, who have all championed his deep space techno sound.Since then Derek has gone on to release eps for Digital Soul, Nice & Nasty and Geek Records, and appeared on compilations from Dublins D1 Recordings and Psychonavigation. Coming up is an appearance on Nice & Nastys Vorsprung Durch Celtik EP, and another release on Digital Soul including a remix from Anthony Shake Shakir. Headspace featured Dereks Red on our 2003 Sampler EP (HS 012) and now were proud to present a full ep from this up-and-coming techno talent. From the warm strings and tough, evolving beats of Improv to the deep downbeat vibe of lequipe, the ep displays a range of moods, while keeping a soulful, classic and melodic attitude throughout.
